The TAG Heuer Aquaracer GMT Batman is already the second model of TAG Heuer’s sporty diver collection that I am allowed to review. After the popular “Pepsi” version convinced me all around in the test, I just could not say no to the sister model with the nickname “Batman”…
TAG Heuer in the Uhrenlounge
Nowadays, luxury watches from well-known manufacturers are usually bought on the Internet. However, especially there it is important to find a suitable and reputable provider – for me, this is the Uhrenlounge. The online portal uhrenlounge.de of Aika Jewelers Dresden kindly provided me with the TAG Heuer Aquaracer GMT Batman. We have also successfully collaborated on the TAG Heuer Aquaracer GMT Pepsi review. In the online store you can find both watches and a large selection of other models from TAG Heuer and other brands. All important links are listed at the end of this review! If you have any questions about watches, the competent customer service of Uhrenlounge is at your disposal.
What watches have to do with superheroes
If you prefer it a little more discreet and can do without the red-blue bezel color scheme of the watches affectionately called “Pepsi”, then for some years now you can buy the more inconspicuous “Batman” models. No, these wristwatches are not a superhero franchise product of the DC marketing department. Marked by their blue-black bezel, the special timepieces are now known by the nickname “Batman”. Rolex set the trend in 2013. The Swiss luxury watchmaker presented the new GMT-Master II with the two-tone ceramic bezel for the first time.
Its ever-growing popularity since then explains why many watchmakers now rely on the blue and black design with its homage to Batman. TAG Heuer does the same with what is possibly its most popular watch collection, the Aquaracer series. Introduced in 2003, the model line has been retreaded since 2017. The TAG Heuer Aquaracer GMT Pepsi was followed most recently by the Batman version. The roughly identical watch with the reference number WAY201T.BA0927 also has the movement called Calibre 7. It drives the GMT hand, making it possible to read a second time zone via the two-tone bezel.
So, all those who love to travel and are interested in a sporty masculine world timepiece with real diving qualities should read on carefully now. The TAG Heuer Aquaracer GMT Batman in a watch review.
Unboxing
The typical TAG Heuer packaging is already familiar to me from previous test models. In the double bottom of the matte black box, you can find the warranty card as well as the user manual. How to present a premium watch appropriately is something the Swiss manufacturer knows a lot about. I take the TAG Heuer Aquaracer GMT Batman off its cushion and free it from its foil.
TAG Heuer’s new Batman watch is a sporty diver with a classic, attractive design, to which the premium brand has returned after several “experiments”. What strikes me positively is the color scheme of the bezel. Clearly more discreet than the extroverted sister model, the TAG Heuer Aquaracer GMT Batman rather meets my personal taste.
The TAG Heuer Aquaracer GMT Batman on the Wrist
Wearing the shiny diver with GMT function on your wrist for the first time, you will quickly understand why the Aquaracer models are among the most popular watches of the manufacturer and a mainstay in the model range. There is simply NO way to dislike this watch. The design, dominated by stainless steel, impresses with its functionality and minimalism. Sporty and straightforward, you could say. Nevertheless, the TAG Heuer Aquaracer GMT Batman does not look like a tool watch, despite its considerable specification list. Rather chic, perfectly suited for everyday business, meetings or business dinner in the evening. A design that knows how to combine different characteristics in an appealing mix – and thus appeals to many people.
From a purely visual point of view, the TAG Heuer Aquaracer GMT Batman definitely has what it takes to be a daily rocker for the modern man.
Waterproof and with good quality – the case
But what about the inner values? Let’s take a look at the case in detail. It is made of scratch-resistant and high-quality stainless steel, whose surfaces are partly brushed and partly polished, which gives the TAG Heuer Aquaracer GMT Batman a dynamic look. In diameter, the case measures 43 millimeters, which makes the diver’s watch well suited for medium as well as larger wrists. There is nothing to complain about the workmanship of the material – premium quality, as you would expect from TAG Heuer.
TAG Heuer hides the Calibre 7 behind a solid stainless steel caseback. Instead of using a viewing window like so many comparable divers, the TAG Heuer Aquaracer GMT Batman features a stylized diver’s helmet, as was used until the last century – a charming detail, in my opinion. With the screw-down caseback, TAG Heuer can guarantee the wearer a water resistance of 300 meters. Even though hardly any of us will ever reach these depths, this value shows quite impressively how high-quality the case of the TAG Heuer Aquaracer GMT Batman is.
The watch glass is reliable and solid. It is made of resistant sapphire, which protects the dial from pressure and shocks. There is no anti-reflective coating, but this does not harm the good readability.
The Calibre 7 in detail
I wind the movement for the first time via the screw-down crown. Its enormous size is striking, which makes setting the time comfortable. Praise goes to the slight play of the crown, through which the hands can be finely adjusted.
The Calibre 7 turns the Aquaracer into a world time watch. The automatic movement installed inside is fundamentally based on a Swiss-made 2893-2 from ETA and enables the display of an additional time zone by means of a blue GMT hand. All key data of the movement are impressive. With a frequency of 28800 vibrations per hour, the Calibre 7 is equipped with a solid power reserve of 42 hours. In everyday life, the automatic movement convinces with reliability and precision.
Dial and bezel of the TAG Heuer Aquaracer GMT Batman
The TAG Heuer Aquaracer GMT Batman shares its dial with its already familiar sister model. The only difference between the two watches here is the color scheme. While the dial with the characteristic horizontal stripe structures is black on the Pepsi model, TAG Heuer has opted for a blue and nautical color scheme on the Aquaracer GMT Batman. Good readability is guaranteed by the large-sized line indices, which are particularly convincing in the dark with a light blue luminous coating. A practical detail that we are more familiar with from Rolex watches: the cyclops magnifier, which is embedded in the watch glass and visually enlarges the date window. A privilege reserved for Aquaracer models in the TAG Heuer world.
The blue-black bezel of the TAG Heuer Aquaracer GMT Batman is far less eye-catching than its sister model’s Pepsi counterpart. Made of lightweight aluminum, it saves quite a bit of weight. In everyday life, the bezel is used to display a second time zone with its 24-hour marker, a useful feature when traveling, through which you can read the time of your home country. While the blue color represents the day half, the black marker indicates the night half.
You can decide for yourself whether you want to align the GMT hand with the bezel, or the bezel with the position of the hand. Both reading modes are possible. When you set the GMT hand, you should make sure that the minute hand is at 12 o’clock at that moment. This ensures that the times are synchronized.
What else to say about the bracelet
The TAG Heuer Aquaracer GMT Batman comes with a stainless steel bracelet, the extension of which is important on dives when it comes to the watch fitting over a wetsuit. Here, TAG Heuer offers a fine adjustment that noticeably improves the wearing comfort.
My conclusion about the TAG Heuer Aquaracer GMT Batman
Like its Pepsi sister model, the TAG Heuer Aquaracer GMT Batman is for me a true daily rocker that no watch collection should be without. I have seen few watches as complete and perfect as TAG Heuer’s GMT dive watch. The timepiece succeeds like no other watch in combining practical functionality with everyday elegance and sportiness. And it does so at a level of quality that, in my opinion, is worth every penny. The watch currently costs 2.900,- euros.
Personally, I like the “Batman” design a bit better than the red-blue Pepsi look. But it’s good that tastes are different.
