The Spinnaker Dumas Bordeaux promises a lot. A striking vintage design in the style of the 70s, very solid diving qualities and all that at an extremely moderate price of £ 315. The functional men’s watch is easy on the wallet, no question. But how much can you expect from Spinnaker? Is the Dumas Bordeaux the perfect entry into the realm of diving watches? I’ve recorded my test impressions….
It’s the eye-catching, masculine Dumas case that immediately catches the eye and offers recognition value. Spinnaker currently uses it in 11 different models. The Bordeaux with the reference number SP-5081-AA is one of the newest and in my eyes also the most beautiful. You don’t see the namesake, dignified Bordeaux color of the dial too often on watches – certainly not on divers. On the wrist, the combination of octagonal case and Bordeaux red cuts a fine figure. Despite fresh design elements, the wearer can look forward to the typical diver’s look. Crown protection, stainless steel bracelet, dot indices and diver bezel may not be missing!
The size also matches the design of this functional and sporty men’s watch. In diameter, the case measures 44 millimeters, between the lugs it is 48 millimeters. So, the Spinnaker Dumas Bordeaux is not small.
Qualitatively above its class
What I like a lot is the case finish. Spinnaker doesn’t experiment and relies on high-quality 316L stainless steel. It is well manufactured. The beveled edges have obviously been given special attention. There is nothing to criticize about the workmanship. However, I am really (positively) surprised by the watch glass. I would not have expected sapphire at this point. The sapphire crystal is extremely durable and scratch-resistant. That’s why it’s mainly used in the premium segment. Thanks to an anti-reflective coating, the dial is very easy to read, even in bright light. In the dark and under water, however, it is better to rely on the luminous material that coats the indices of the dial and the bezel.
Spinnaker certifies its 70s-style case water resistance to a depth of 300 meters! Thus, the Dumas Bordeaux surpasses not a few competitors. This value is impressive.
An insider tip for beginners
The diver is powered by a NH35 automatic movement from Seiko. The date complication at 3 o’clock is supplied by TMI, a subsidiary of the Japanese watch giant. For the use in the Spinnaker Dumas Bordeaux, this caliber is exactly the right choice. Favorably priced, it comes up with a power reserve of maximum 41 hours.
In summary, the Spinnaker Dumas Bordeaux is a real insider tip. To all, who want to get a first diver watch with quality and mechanical movement, I can warmly recommend the Bordeaux. The timepiece has what makes a classic diver’s watch. It is functional, sporty, high quality and offers that little extra. These are the exclusive color and the striking case. A clear buy tip!
