As you know, the Smartwatch topic is often discussed in the watch world. Despite the slump in the watch market in recent years, electronics giants like Apple, Samsung and Huawei are developing even more sophisticated ideas. CASIO EDIFICE EQB-1000D-1AER Review.
More and more manufacturers, that often have their origin in Asia try to find their place in the confusing market. The question of why you need a Smartwatch when you already own a smartphone is actually superfluous. Although the idea of a networked watch is somehow ingenious. Today, I would like to introduce the new model from the Edifice series of the Japanese cult watch brand Casio: a networked watch with many technical features, but still a real chronograph as we imagine and love it: the Edifice EQB-1000D. By the way – today’s watch is smart in its very own way. I would like to show you how Casio is breaking new ground in smartwatch segment with its Edifice EQB-1000D. An incredibly slim chronograph full of trend-setting technology
From the very first moment the slim design of the Edifice catches the eye. Despite the mighty stainless steel case and the large dial with three additional dials as well as seven hands and a diameter of 45 millimetres, the watch does not appear too bulky or clumsy. Rather elegant. If some of you now scrolls up because you think you have read it wrong – yes, this watch is really from Casio! If you associate the Japanese manufacturer only with digital displays, the invention of the quartz watch and bulky G-Shock watches, you have definetly missed something. Because watches from Casio are currently up to date like never before. They present themselves as high-quality, technically elegant and trendy. Nevertheless, they have not denied their identity and have retained the functionality and innovation typical of Casio. This also applies to the Edifice EQB-1000D. CASIO EDIFICE EQB-1000D-1AER Review – The case is 30% flatter
The case is just 8.9 millimetres thick. If you consider that in addition to the many hands, the Bluetooth and Tough Solar functions are also built in, which all need their space too, this is very thin. According to Casio, the 30% thinner design in comparison to the predecessor (which was massive, 13 millimeters thick) could be achieved through finer modules and a new type of technology. 130 grams are still decent. The workmanship of the matt stainless steel is of the highest standard. The case has four screws on the front. The watch is waterproof to a depth of 100 meters, i.e. up to a pressure of 10 bar. The stainless steel crown and the two pushers at 2 and 4 o’clock also make a high-quality impression. They have engraved, fine applications.
The bracelet consists of stainless steel links and offers a pleasant wearing comfort. Furthermore, it simply looks noble! You can’t compare a bracelet made of fabric or silicone with that.
The dial of the CASIO EDIFICE EQB-1000D-1AER
I don’t want to go into detail about the techniques such as changing the displays via smartphone or the induction solar modules, because I’ll write about that more detailed later. What you can say is that the design of the watch is really beautiful and I absolutely like it. The Edifice makes a very sporty impression with its dial in metallic blue, the displays in a turquoise tone and the technical-futuristic typography. Sure, it is also a watch with special gimmicks for racers. It is not for nothing that Casio sponsors the Toro Rosso Formula 1 racing team with its Edifice-Collection. Our Casio Chronograph has four dials. One main dial and three smaller dials at 12, 6 and 9 o’clock. The main dial has silver lines as markers, matching the noble case. The hour markings are particularly large and extroverted. A detail, which I like very much: At the places, where the speedometer for the lap display is located, the markings make room for it. The main markings are framed in an outer, dark ring. The small dial below 12 o’clock indicates the 24-hour time, has a single white hour hand and a cross-shaped marker. The dial at 9 o’clock shows the world time of a city selectable with the smartphone, and also indicates whether it is morning or afternoon with a half-enclosed tiny dial. These are the small, loving details that I like so much about the Edifice and many other Casio models. The small hour hand has the turquoise tone again, a little eyecatcher.
By the way, for all my fascination with this watch and its dial, I should not forget that all the information is easy to read. This is due on the one hand to the very tidy, functional design, and on the other hand to the really good workmanship and printing.
Let’s come to my personal highlight of the dial: the lap time display. It has the design of a sporty speedometer. What exactly does the display measure now? The difference between the current and the previous lap time in the range of -5 to +1 seconds. Well, one more reason to visit the race track again. The speedometer is highlighted slightly from the dial and has more turquoise details.
A date window is embedded at 4 o’clock. Other imprints such as the logo of the Edifice-Collection complete the dial. The dial is protected by a particularly scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.
A pioneering technology
Surely some have already wondered how the clock is driven. The technology is once again extraordinary and impressive. Integrated into the dial is Casio’s Tough Solar System, a solar module that can absorb enough energy even in low light conditions or artificial light and transmit it to the battery in the case. If my Edifice were to go into the drawer, it could still run after 24 months. Casio has made many components smaller, especially here, to make the Edifice as slim as it is now. What happens when you pair the smartphone with the watch
I know, we have to talk about the smartphone again… But if you think that the Edifice can’t manage without a mobile phone that is permanently next to it, you are wrong. I would like to show you some useful settings that you can control via Bluetooth networking and the app that comes with it.
Just download the Edifice Connected App and connect your chronograph via Bluetooth. Using the app, now you can select cities, whose time zone is automatically set on the small world time dial. Furthermore, you can also have the daylight saving time or your own time zone set automatically. A Bluetooth signal ensures that the Edifice is always accurate. Of course you can also download the app without a watch and test the functions.
By the way, it should be mentioned that Casio does not enter new technical territory with the Edifice EQB-1000D. In the field of networked watches, they have been on the road for a while, and very successfully so. The Connected Watch EQB-500 already caused a sensation in 2014. In the following year, the manufacturer was able to establish itself as market leader in the Connected Watches segment, according to the „Society for Consumer Research“. We are therefore dealing here with mature, but once again improved technology.
Conclusion
Finally, I would like to come back to the topic of Smartwatches. The Edifice EQB-1000D is certainly no Smartwatch in the conventional sense. Nevertheless, it is always smart. Because Casio chooses a different approach here. Without heart rate monitor. Without pedometer. Without social media. The Edifice is a chronograph that takes advantage of certain achievements such as Bluetooth and integrates them intelligently by controlling conventional functions. It does not want to score with the most extraordinary features. It does not want to reinvent itself. No, the Edifice reminds me again and again of what I love about chronographs: the many measuring functions that can be read at a glance. And nothing more. CASIO EDIFICE EQB-1000D-1AER Review.
Bluetooth networking and apps are nothing completely new at Casio. We are already familiar with such technologies from G-Shock models or the Edifice predecessors, like i already mentioned. But this model knows how to package these functions into a noble, slim design that is sporty, elegant, but not too clunky or technical. This meets the spirit oft he age of many people. And apparently also that of those who work at G-Shock. Many employees from Casio’s flagship line are said to have bought the Edifice EQB-1000D. Well, cheating with watches is not that bad, isn’t it?
