The Nubeo Viking Radar Red breaks with the established traditions. It is radical, technical and sporty! Whether there is more to it, you will find out in this article…
The wristwatch rethought
If you let a child draw a wristwatch, they will present you with a more or less round result on paper. Most watch manufacturers focus on round dials, round bezels and round cases. However, the fact that this is not a law has been proven in recent years by brands that keep coming up with unusual designs, such as rectangular ones. Nubeo, whose Thresher Adriatic Blue I tested a few months ago, has taken a similar direction with its Viking series. Watches in this collection combine an eye-catching tonneau-shaped case with timeless industrial design. The rule is: the watch’s construction is not hidden under a stainless steel dress, but openly displayed.
Its name Viking is borrowed from the NASA project of the same name. The mission was the first ever to reach the surface of our neighboring planet Mars in 1976 and sent detailed images of the surface of the red planet.
How fitting that my test watch also comes in the spirited “Radar Red”. In this color, the angular watch with the reference NB-6064 becomes a polarizing statement on the wrist. By the way, there are three other color variants that are similarly extroverted. With the ergonomic red rubber strap, the sporty wristwatch is also very comfortable to wear. There is praise for the features. A black alternative is found in the box. With an included tool, changing the strap is unproblematic.
Details of the Nubeo Viking Radar Red
The tonneau case is made of 316L stainless steel, which has a matte shimmer and is well-made. Like the other three references, the Nubeo Viking Radar Red is limited to 500 pieces each. You’ll find a screw-in plaque with your production number on the right side. There, you would actually expect the crown, but it has moved to 6 o’clock. Nevertheless, winding the skeletonized automatic movement did not cause me any difficulties. I like the blue color accent, which is picked up by the inner bezel.
At first, you have to get used to the dial, as the spectacular skeletonization is of course at the expense of readability. The fine hands and gears are protected by mineral crystal. At the price of USD 1,359, I would have hoped for sapphire crystal. Nevertheless, an anti-reflective coating was applied. Nubeo equips its Viking Radar Red with a water resistance of up to 5 bar – splash-proof.
My final conclusion is positive. Those who have grown tired of the same old designs will find the Nubeo Viking Radar Red a welcome change. However, you should appreciate its sportiness and extravagance and wear it with pride.
