The launch sees the studio take a much anticipated step into the revitalised Swiss Automatic market with a refined dive watch.
Instrmnt D Series Swiss Mechanical Watch
On the same day that they celebrated their fifth anniversary as a studio, Instrmnt have this week released their latest watch: the D-Series. It is a first foray into mechanical horology from the Scottish design house after previously focusing solely on quartz powered models, and one that takes the form of a minimal dive watch with an impressive specification.
Built in Germany, each model features a bespoke Swiss Sellita SW200 automatic movement, 200M water resistance, a sapphire crystal case back, and a hardened steel case. It is available with either a black or silver bezel and a wide range of Italian and German made straps in leather, rubber, fabric and steel.

There has been speculation in recent months that Instrmnt would be moving into the mechanical watch market after building a loyal following of customers who appreciate their functional approach to design, the results of which have extended to a varied range of products over the years, including bikes, clocks and umbrellas.
Ross Baynham, co-founder and Creative Director, says of the release, “The mechanical watch is a product that we have wanted to make for many years, and it is exciting to finally release the D-Series – on our fifth birthday – after 18 months of development. I think the design language progresses our signature aesthetic, and furthermore, I believe it to be the best value proposition in the Swiss Automatic market right now.”

Indeed, the price-to-specification is impressive, with the D-Series set to retail for £595 when it goes on sale in December. And if you can’t wait that long? For the next 30 days it is available pre-order for only £295 via Kickstarter – a nod to Instrmnt’s first campaign on the platform exactly five years ago. Turning back to Kickstarter seems to have been a popular decision: the D-Series surpassed its funding target seven hours after the project went live on Tuesday.
