The bright yellow Casio G-SHOCK GA-B2100C-9AER and its two dark sister models bring a breath of fresh air to the popular entry-level collection of the Japanese watch giant. Casio has thoroughly redesigned its predecessor, the 2100. With smartphone connectivity and the proven Tough Solar system, the B2100 models draw on technology from the upper class.
A new generation
Step by step, the new GA-B2100 collection is being expanded. The three models Casio G-SHOCK GA-B2100C-9AER (yellow), Casio G-SHOCK GA-B2100-1AER (black) and Casio G-SHOCK GA-B2100-2AER (blue) made the start this year. Now more trendy colors follow with, for example, sensational rainbow dials. My favorite, however, remains the thoroughly yellow B2100C-9AER. It’s already clear: this is the perfect watch for the summer! An accessory that, along with beach volleyball and snorkel mask, is essential for the perfect beach day.
Apart from the new colors, little has changed externally when you compare the new watches with their predecessors. The distinctive octagonal bezel design, reminiscent of the very first G-Shock, has remained. So does the diamond-shaped digital display of the dial. But why change something that has stood the test of time? Wearing comfort is still exceptional thanks to the 52-gram lightweight resin case. At 11.9 millimeters, the watch remains very flat and practical. The resin strap meets all requirements and even defies salt water and sand.
Equipped with solar power and smartphone link
If you want to find out what’s new, you must take a look at the inner workings. The Casio G-SHOCK GA-B2100C-9AER stands out with technical upgrades. This keeps the affordable timepiece on the pulse of time. Sustainability is becoming more and more of an issue there. Solar cells are built into the dial of the watch. They supply the movement with energy. Surplus energy can be stored in a rechargeable battery and called up as needed.
The functions that are maintained in this way are now even more diverse. In recent years, Casio increasingly rely on Bluetooth technology, through which the Casio G-SHOCK GA-B2100C-9AER can be connected to a smartphone. The most useful functions such as time, alarm, world time or stop times can now be intuitively accessed and controlled via app. Nevertheless, those who want to do without looking at their cell phone don’t have to limit themselves. Most of the functions can also be set via a pusher in the case.
Typical G-SHOCK features are also not neglected. I would like to emphasize the good workmanship of the resin case, which was reinforced with carbon. The lightweight construction continues with the built-in mineral crystal. And to come back to the summer watch suitability: Water resistance up to 20 bar makes the G-SHOCK GA-B2100C-9AER a very robust companion on the wrist.
How to make good even better
Casio is to be congratulated on a successful further development. The successor, which now bears a ‘B’ in front of the 2100, shines with meaningful improvements. A smartphone connection opens new possibilities for the wearer to operate the watch. The concept is more than just a gimmick. One deals with the functions of the Casio G-SHOCK GA-B2100C-9AER more often, uses them purposefully. Sure, the Bluetooth connection including app was already available before. However, at a price of 159,- Euros RRP, it also becomes affordable for those who previously gave high-end MTGs and the like a wide berth. Conclusion: the flexible summer watch for everyone!
