With the Atlantic Worldmaster 1888 Automatic Chronograph Day Date, the Swiss traditional manufacturer Atlantic extends its classic collection upwards. Whether the timeless-elegant chronograph can prove its flagship qualities, you can read in the following…
A new top model for the Worldmaster series
When I think of Atlantic Watches, the name ‘Worldmaster’ comes to my mind at the same time. The term stands for the Swiss brand’s probably best-known watch family, which offers a wide range of elegant men’s watches with several collections. If you love it classic and discreet, you really can’t go past the Worldmaster 1888 models. However, customers with price expectations far above the entry-level segment (at just under 600 Swiss francs) have had to resort to the Worldmaster 1888 Limited Edition 2020 or other series – until now….
Atlantic has given its popular core series Worldmaster 1888 a new model, which can be located with its equipment (and its price of CHF 2,040, -) in the higher premium segment. The first pictures are optimistic and show a noble chronograph in a graceful design and a color scheme, which is already familiar to the connoisseurs among you from the previous three-hand watches. Well, I have a weakness for rich blue tones and rose gold applications.
Moreover, the watch called Atlantic Worldmaster 1888 Automatic Chronograph Day Date is, for a change, not an aviator, of which I have tested quite a few lately. A completely classic chronograph – what more could you want? Atlantic itself emphasizes how affordable the new Worldmaster 1888 flagship is. That makes me even more curious. What does the Atlantic Worldmaster 1888 Automatic Chronograph Day Date have to offer? There are answers in this watch review.
The chronograph you wanted?
The Atlantic Worldmaster 1888 Automatic Chronograph Day Date has left the entry-level price segment. This becomes clear at the latest when you unpack the package with your newly acquired chronograph. The wristwatch comes with a reddish-brown, luxurious wooden box, which also serves as an electric watch winder. Convenient for those who have been undecided about buying a watch winder.
But now to the Atlantic Worldmaster 1888 Automatic Chronograph Day Date itself. The timepiece definitely knows how to please at first glance. In my hand, I hold a timeless and beautiful watch that has something very stylish about it. The calm, rich blue contrasts interestingly with the shimmering hands and indices. At 3 o’clock, the namesake date and day of the week windows are inset. The dial is framed by a highly polished stainless steel case, with a black calfskin strap attached to the lugs.
On the back, the case is pierced by a viewing window with a view of the automatic movement. What many watches have nowadays, especially in this category, may not be a wow factor anymore, but it looks very good and represents the love for mechanical movements. So, the first impression is more than positive.
The Atlantic Worldmaster 1888 Automatic Chronograph Day Date on the wrist
Useful functionality is rather less offered by the new Atlantic Worldmaster 1888 Automatic Chronograph. Specifications like the very detailed dial or the highly polished stainless steel case don’t necessarily allow you to take the watch with you in the air or in the water, either. The watch with the reference number 8934, 52852.41.55R is not a functional watch, nor does it have to be. Rather, Atlantic is targeting this timepiece at an audience that admires timeless, classic design and traditional Swiss watchmaking. Those who wear the watch on their wrist exude awareness of these aspects.
It is therefore best to wear your Atlantic Worldmaster 1888 Automatic Chronograph Day Date on more noble, appropriate occasions. These can be celebrations, for example. But also in business the chronograph looks good with a jacket. There are hardly any restrictions as long as you don’t want to climb a mountain, enter a sports plane or cross an ocean.
With a case diameter of 42 millimeters and a thickness of 14.90 millimeters, the Atlantic Worldmaster 1888 Automatic Chronograph Day Date fits pretty much any wrist. These flexible dimensions are large enough, but don’t seem too brute. A problem that many chronographs have often enough.
The case in detail
Its circular case is made of stainless steel. The shape of the middle section blends dynamically into the lugs. The approach of polishing the case to a high gloss has been followed through 100% by Atlantic. Matte case surfaces are rarely found, only on the back. I really like the case finish. You can see Atlantic’s perfectionism and claim to bring a premium model onto the market. There is nothing to complain about, unless you don’t like high-gloss polishes. But that is a matter of taste.
If you buy a chronograph, you’ll be happy to use its functions. A pleasant feel of the two pushers at 2 and 4 o’clock is crucial. Here, the Atlantic Worldmaster 1888 Automatic Chronograph Day Date scores with a very sensitively tuned feel. The same is true for the crown, which is fluted on the side and facilitates setting and winding the chronograph. You can see that functionality does not play an unimportant role.
Would you like another example? Alright! Atlantic has provided the watch glass with a whole five anti-reflective coatings. They make it easier to read the dial and subdials. Especially with the playful and small-scale design of the Worldmaster Chronograph, you depend on it. Made of sapphire, the watch crystal can also be attested to pressure resistance and resistance to scratches. However, that should be the standard for a watch priced at over 2000 Swiss francs.
With a water resistance of 5 bar, the case can be certified as ‘splash resistant’.
Swiss watchmaking craftsmanship also inside
A Valjoux 7750 automatic movement from Swiss manufacturer ETA forms the heart and drive of the Atlantic Worldmaster 1888 Automatic Chronograph Day Date. For years, it has been considered the standard movement for chronographs. Powerful, reliable and precise, it drives the most important functions of Atlantic’s new Worldmaster 1888. In addition to hour, minute and central seconds, these are the typical chronograph functions such as 30-minute counter, 12-hour time, small seconds and the day date at 3 o’clock.
The movement is equipped with a power reserve of 48 hours. So you can leave the Worldmaster 1888 Automatic Chronograph lying around for two days without having to rewind it in the meantime. For lovers of mechanical movements, the glass caseback is a real must.
Dial and bracelet of the Atlantic Worldmaster 1888 Automatic Chronograph Day Date
When it comes to the dial, the Atlantic designers put a lot of attention to detail and created a classic, playful look. On a dark blue background, the 12-hour time can be read at 6 o’clock, the small seconds at 9 o’clock and the 30-minute time at 12 o’clock. All scales, the minute scale and a tachymeter on the rehaut are kept in white and neatly printed on the dial. Hands and hour indexes, on the other hand, are finished with a rose gold coating and harmonize very well with the dark blue dial. Red color accents successfully round off the overall look.
Best readability and functionality take a back seat due to the design, that should be clear. Therefore, Atlantic also does without the coating with luminous material.
The Atlantic Worldmaster 1888 Automatic Chronograph Day Date can convince with the strap. This consists of black calfskin and is equipped with a stainless steel butterfly clasp. From my own experience, this is more durable than the more frequently used alternative with a pin buckle. I like the pleasantly soft feel. This watch you actually do not want to take off!
My conclusion about the Atlantic Worldmaster 1888 Automatic Chronograph Day Date
Possibly it was a crowning highlight that the Worldmaster 1888 collection has been missing. The three-hand watches are beautiful and of good quality, no question. However, they don’t stand a chance against the best model in the series, the Atlantic Worldmaster 1888 Automatic Chronograph Day Date. The timepiece proves in many ways that it is a serious watch from the upper premium segment. With size, prestige and good quality, Atlantic has created a worthy flagship that there is no way around if you are interested in Worldmaster models.
Innovations? An unconventional design? Unusual materials? If you’re looking for that, you’re in the wrong place. The Atlantic Worldmaster 1888 Automatic Chronograph Day Date does not reinvent the wheel (or rather the watch), but it knows how to please. No experiments, you could say in conclusion. As a noble and stylish chronograph with Swiss quality for every day, I can only warmly recommend this model to you. You can’t complain about the price of CHF 2.040,-. This is more than reasonable.
