We are talking about the Aquatico Bronze Sea Star. This is a diver of a young, upcoming microbrand from Hong Kong, which I would also like to introduce to you.
What you need to know about Aquatico…
Aquatico is a young watch manufacturer that has been entered the market in 2016. The robust men’s watches are characterized by their ability to withstand even extreme weather conditions such as heat, cold or wetness and to function optimally. This can be seen in the extravagant, angular design, the use of high-quality materials and the special illumination of the indices. It was the first time i saw this special technique. Just this much I want to tell you in advance: I have never seen anything like this before. But more about that later.
The name Aquatico was borrowed by the founder from a Filipino beach, a true watch fan since early childhood. The beach of Acuatico is known far beyond the Philippines.
All Aquatico watches are manufactured in Hong Kong and from there they are shipped worldwide free of charge.
The first impression
In a square box the Aquatico is now on my table. The discreet blue-grey packaging with the stylized dolphin is visually appealing. Next to the watch there is a second silicone bracelet in the box. The Aquatico Bronze Sea Star is available in two versions, which differ only in the surface design of the bezel. While we will be looking at the ceramic version today, the full bronze version should be of particular interest to the very big bronze fans among you. The ceramic version, on the other hand, is more reminiscent of classic divers. Apart from this design aspect, however, both watches are identical.
With its generous dimensions, the Aquatico Bronze Sea Star is not that discreet on the wrist. Nevertheless, the 42 millimeter diameter of my Diver is comparatively moderate, if you compare the Bronze Sea Star with other watches of the Hong Kong brand. The eye-catching design with the massive curved bronze adds one on top. In combination with the brown leather strap the Bronze Sea Star makes a very good first impression. The design is exciting, the quality seems to be right at first glance. Whether the watch, which according to Aquatico people from the military to field staff wear, can keep its promises, we will find out together in detail.
The case – AQUATICO Bronze Sea Star
With a diameter of 42 millimeters, the Bronze Sea Star has a height of 14 millimeters and weighs a respectable 120 grams. Like most of its watches, Aquatico uses a 316L stainless steel case. This is a must, especially for a diving watch, because of its resistance to wind and weather. In the Bronze Sea Star it receives the characteristic bronze alloy. More precisely, this is a CuSn8 alloy. When the case of the bronze watch develops its characteristic patina depends on the ratio of which materials are mixed together. With the Bronze Sea Star, you can assume that a patina will develop quite quickly, which will make your watch an unmistakable unique one.
All in all, the diving watch makes a very good impression in terms of workmanship. If you consider that Aquatico places the watch in the middle price segment, this is almost astonishing. AQUATICO Bronze Sea Star.
With the view into the detail I notice fast further characteristics, which one would not have expected with a quite favorable price in such a way. For example, the Aquatico Bronze Sea Star has the curved watch glass which is typical for many divers’ watches. Here sapphire crystal is used. Those who are a little bit familiar with the production of a watch know that the process to produce these domed sapphire crystals is quite expensive.
Additional steps in the production process are ultimately what make the difference in terms of cost. I would have expected this design element more in watches with four-digit prices. For me, the domed glass is definitely a highlight and in my opinion, it is simply part of a successful diving watch! The glass has an anti-reflective coating for good visibility in the open air.
The case is waterproof up to a pressure of 30 bar. So diving down to a depth of 300 meters would not be a problem, even if most of us won’t use the Bronze Sea Star for diving.
For the case back Aquatico leaves you two choices in the individual design. In the basic version the Bronze Sea Star has a simple stainless steel bottom with a dolphin engraving. Those of you who would like to give your diving watch a nautical extra touch can equip their Aquatico with the more exclusive “mermaid & dophin case back”. In addition to the mermaid on the dolphin, further specifications are engraved in the stainless steel.
Bronze watches usually never have a bronze alloy case back. The patina would rub off on the wrist over time. AQUATICO Bronze Sea Star.
The movement
As a relatively young brand, Aquatico has done everything right with its movement. The microbrand from Hong Kong uses a TMI Seiko NH35 automatic movement in its diver. This should be the first choice for most newcomers on the market.
The Japanese movement impresses with its good accuracy as well as its longevity in everyday life. This fits perfectly with the ambitions Aquatico has for its Diver. In any case, there is nothing to complain about when choosing the movement.
The dial – AQUATICO Bronze Sea Star
While the crown, case and bezel are made of bronze alloy, Aquatico decided to give the surfaces of the bezel and dial a classic divers’ watch look – at least as far as my version is concerned. With the full bronze version, everyone should be able to find something to their taste. The matt brown ceramic surfaces are cleanly finished. On the dial, there are stylized hour markers in a geometric design as well as golden prints, which are beautiful in combination with the bronze look. One should always pay attention to the printing of the indices with microbrands.
Who wants to save production costs, does it mostly here. Unclean and badly readable markings are often the result. With the Aquatico Bronze Sea Star the opposite is the case. The very clean and good printing stands out in any case. There is also a rectangular, golden framed date window at 3 o’clock. All in all the dial of the Aquatico is very reduced and tidy. So if you really use the watch in action (for example on dives), you will benefit from the very good readability. AQUATICO Bronze Sea Star.
Important for good readability is not only the minimalistic dial but also a good illumination of the indices. While most manufacturers rely on the usual coating with luminous material here, Aquatico goes its own way. In a special process, tritium gas reacts with phosphorescent paint, creating a strong light source with which the indices are illuminated. In my test, the result with Super Luminova BGW9 luminous material was very convincing, especially under poor lighting conditions and in complete darkness.
The bracelet
Aquatico completes a successful watch with a matching brown leather strap. The buckle with the engraved signature of the Manufacture is also made of a bronze alloy and therefore matches the rest of the watch very well. The wearing comfort was extremely good during my testing period. The black leather on the inside is very soft and pleasant on the skin.
If you want to use the watch in nature, you should of course do so without a leather strap. Aquatico has taken precautions and supplies a black silicone strap with every watch. This fits the design of the watch very well. The fact that the bracelet does not have to be purchased for an extra charge is also praiseworthy.
My conclusion – AQUATICO Bronze Sea Star
The watch that you get here is quite impressive. With the Bronze Sea Star, Aquatico has launched a very sophisticated diver’s watch in the lower to medium price segment. The quality is consistently good, the design is very successful in my opinion. Even though bronze watches always polarize and are a matter of taste due to their special, changing look, the trend 2020 is unbroken. The interest in bronze watches should continue to grow in the coming months and years.
