UW Watches is reinventing the diving watch: the Hong Kong microbrand, which was founded in 2020, wants to launch the Aequorea, an automatic diver whose design comes directly from nature – inspired by a jellyfish! The Kickstarter campaign is already running and the fundraising goal has been reached quickly.
UW – the abbreviation stands for Under Water and makes it clear that the still young subsidiary brand of OVD Watches specializes in diving watches. The unique design concepts are reminiscent of shapes and structures from nature. “The concepts are inspired by my daily life. I hope my design would give you a new perspective of life,” founder and designer Ricky Lam says, who also launched parent company OVD. The group is known for its successful Kickstarter campaigns.
The Aequorea (Latin for belonging to the sea) is a unique watch whose design is reminiscent of the appearance of a luminescent jellyfish and elicits a similar reaction at first sight: calm, awe and fascination. Its three-dimensional dial crossed with fluted textures, the characteristic domed caseback with the stylized jellyfish and the indexes illuminated by luminous material – a look that seems to come straight from nature, perfectly proportioned. In this way, the Aequorea breaks with traditional diving watch designs, which have represented stagnation in the watch market for decades.
But it’s not just the looks that Ricky Lam’s UW design team is using to persuade the supporters of the Kickstarter campaign: the Aequorea is a true “life fighter” and impresses with a high level of quality as a tool watch. Measuring 42 millimeters in diameter, the case is made of durable 316L stainless steel and guarantees water resistance to a depth of 200 meters. Inside works a reliable and powerful NH35A automatic caliber from Seiko.
With the dial illuminated in various SuperLuminova colors, UW Watches sets new standards in readability and clarity. Coupled with the multi-layered structure of the dial and the illuminated crown, UW Watches creates an unprecedented design with depth and high recognition value. The rotating diving bezel is modeled after the silhouette of a jellyfish. For comfort and a secure fit, a solid 316L stainless steel bracelet features a diver’s extension folding clasp. Ideal for wearing the watch over a wetsuit as well, making it perfect for diving.
Available in a total of five color options, the Aequorea comes in a functional watch case. UW Watches wants to offer the high-quality watch at an affordable price. The Super Early Bird price is USD 232 with limited quantities. At the regular market launch, the retail price will be at USD 449. The first models are expected to ship in January 2022.
OVD Group, to which UW Watches belongs, is considered a true Kickstarter specialist. This ensures a successful market launch and a smooth production of the watches. After more than ten outstanding Kickstarter campaigns, there is no doubt that the Aequorea will also be a real breakthrough.
