Mühle launches the Mühle-Glashütte 29er Casual, a maritime and chic men’s watch. A special feature: the German manufacturer from Glashütte, Saxonia specifies the height of the case as just 9.35 millimetres.
According to Mühle, the 29er Casual is therefore the watch with the flattest case in the entire collection. What the new timepiece in the moderate, maritime design is capable of, where the name comes from and for which of you the watch could be interesting, I found it out in the review. Have fun!
The first impression Mühle-Glashütte 29er Casual
The 29er Casual comes as a chic and sporty men’s watch, just as it is in my hand. The minimalist stainless steel case, the dark blue dial – a watch that you could wear perfectly in your job, matching your jacket. Not too ostentatious, but also anything but trivial and simple. The wearing comfort is incredibly pleasant. One reason for this is above all the very narrow case with a height of only 9.35 millimeters. When you consider that an automatic movement, a Mühle typical woodpecker neck regulator and other technical refinements are built into the 29er, this is quite astonishing. For me it is definitely a novelty. I have never seen something like this before. Mühle-Glashütte 29er Casual.
While a watch like the Sebatallion GMT is one of the most technically sophisticated watches in the Mühle collection, the 29 is the opposite. This does not mean that it is backward or outdated. But it is certainly not a “nautical instrument”. Nor does it have to be, because this watch has completely different qualities. We will now take a closer look at them.
Where the name comes from
The 29er Casual has a name giver, who, how could it be otherwise, is at home in the sailing sport. The 29er is also a small regatta dinghy. This sailing dinghy impresses with its high speed and easy steering. We will find out whether this diversity is also found in the 29er Casual.
The case Mühle-Glashütte 29er Casual
The narrow case is cylindrical and minimalist. Clear geometric shapes, corners and edges underpin the business character that the 29er definitely has. Mühle uses stainless steel for the case.
The surfaces are both brushed and polished. The diameter of the case is 42.4 millimetres. Nevertheless, the 29er Casual does not appear over-proportional on the wrist, which is due to the low case height. The workmanship of the case is of the highest standard. But you’re used to this from the Saxon manufacturer.
The brushed case back allows a view of the interior of the chic men’s watch. Here you can admire the automatic movement behind a viewing window. The case back is screwed six times. Engraved are the manufacturer’s logo and further information about the watch. To protect the dial, Mühle uses sapphire glass in the 29 Casual sapphire crystal. The glass is pleasantly anti-reflective so that you can read the time while sailing in the blazing midday sun. Mühle-Glashütte 29er Casual.
The crown is made of stainless steel and has a very pleasant size. In order not to disturb in everyday life, it is protected by two bulges on the side of the case.
If you are on the high seas after a dive, nothing will stand in your way. With the 29er Casual you can dive to a depth of 100 meters. The sturdy case can easily withstand a pressure of up to 10bar. Not to forget – the 29er is not even an explicit diver’s watch and manages this pressure with a case that is just 9.35 millimetres thick. Here you can see that Mühle is a specialist in the field of diving watches.
The movement
The 29er Casual is equipped with a Swiss SW 300-1 movement, an automatic movement. This one has received an “upgrade” before the installation in the case. Mühle is incorporating several technical refinements here. So among other things the patented and characteristic woodpecker neck regulation is built in. The trademark of every Mühle watch is responsible for the fine adjustment of the movement under the toughest conditions. Mühle-Glashütte 29er Casual. The shape is reminiscent of a woodpecker’s neck and absorbs shocks very effectively. A separate rotor is also used. The automatic movement has a stop-second, a quick- date correction and a power reserve of 42 hours. In addition, Mühle gives the movement its typical surface finishes.
My little highlight is the circular viewing window on the case back, which allows you to admire the movement.
The dial
The dial is pleasantly quiet. The cool, navy blue dial radiates this calm. The dial also looks very tidy. It contains only the most necessary information and does without various “gadgets” such as totalizers. I especially liked this in everyday life. I was focused and didn’t let myself get distracted. In between, however, I couldn’t avoid a quick glance at the design, which in my opinion is very successful.
The dial is divided in two by a fine, circular line. The indices have polished surfaces and therefore fit perfectly to the stainless steel case. They serve as hour markers and are applied with minute markers. The hands have the same design. Below 12 o’clock is the manufacturer’s Mühle logo, above 6 o’clock the automatic markings. The date display is located in a rectangular window at 3 o’clock and matches the colour of the dial.
The hour markers and the hands are covered with Swiss Super-LumiNova. At night and in poorly lit rooms, the indices therefore shine very evenly and brightly. The workmanship of the entire dial leaves nothing to be desired.
The bracelet – Mühle-Glashütte 29er Casual
Mühle offers three different bracelets. A grey-blue suede bracelet, a brown leather bracelet and a grey textile bracelet.
All three bracelets have a stainless steel pin buckle. So you are spoilt for choice. During my test days with the 29er Casual I wore the watch with the brown leather strap. What more can I say great about it? I am thrilled! The inside of the leather strap is lined with a light and very soft leather. This goes very well with the skin and makes for great wearing comfort. A lot of love for detail rounds off a successful bracelet. The buckle is made of polished stainless steel with engraved logo. Mühle-Glashütte 29er Casual.
A change of strap within seconds
Mühle has designed a very simple and ingenious device in the area of the strap lugs with which you can change your bracelet very quickly and easily. The bracelet has spring bars.
If you pull a small stainless steel lever on the inside of the leather strap to the side, the spring bars retract. The result: The bracelet can be removed and replaced.
My conclusion Mühle-Glashütte 29er Casual
It’s hard enough to criticize something about the 29er Casual. For such a successful result, the Mühle watchmakers have equipped the timepiece with many high-class details that you might only recognize at second glance. On the one hand, there is the fascinating technology that is also found in the nautical instruments of the Glashütte manufactory and which offers so much comfort.
Then the 29er Casual captivates with its unique, understated and noble design with its incredibly thin case. Mühle has succeeded in designing a watch that is both sporty and very luxurious looking, and that fits perfectly with any modern business outfit. Last but not least, it is perhaps also the special feeling you have when you wear the watches of the traditional German manufacturer. Mühle-Glashütte 29er Casual. Self-confidence, modern luxury, versatility and a soft spot for technology – that is what I associate with Mühle. And these are precisely the values that are contained in the 29er Casual.
If you are looking for a watch that embodies exactly these values, there is no way around this innovation. The price for the 29er Casual is 1790 Euros.
