The Spinnaker Fleuss Automatic Pearl Diver makes luxury affordable and attractive for beginners. Within the collection, the Fleuss name has always been synonymous with the charm of 1950s diving watches. Just before Christmas, Spinnaker has released its classic in a new look. The mother-of-pearl dials are real eye-catchers!
Mother of pearl has never been so affordable
Anyone who has owned a watch with a real mother-of-pearl dial can understand my enthusiasm for this special material. Watchmakers spend hours cutting and carving the mother-of-pearl oysters to size. The result, however, is something to be proud of. And: each mother-of-pearl dial is unique and makes the wristwatch special. At Spinnaker, they claim to use particularly high-quality mother-of-pearl, which is primarily reserved for Swiss makes.
But which model should be equipped with a mother-of-pearl dial on the occasion of a new Limited Edition? Spinnaker’s choice fell on the Fleuss. Named after pioneering diver Henry Fleuss (the “father” of scuba diving), the diving watch’s silhouettes are reminiscent of the glorious 1950s, when hobby diving was still in its infancy. The new mother-of-pearl Fleuss comes in three color options, Midnight Pearl, Marine Pearl and White Pearl. I took a closer look at the latter. The probably most elegant reference (SP-5108-33) is, like its sister models, limited to a total of 450 pieces and costs 390.95 Euros.
For the moderate price, you get a solid diver’s watch, which inspires especially visually. With traditional lines and high-quality white mother-of-pearl, the Fleuss Automatic Pearl Diver appears extremely classic. If you appreciate the high nostalgia factor, this is exactly the right watch for you.
Details of the Spinnaker Fleuss Automatic Pearl Diver
The Spinnaker Fleuss Automatic Pearl Diver is also fun to look at in terms of quality. The case made of 316L stainless steel convinces with a successful finish. Underneath, there is a powerful NH35 automatic movement from Seiko. The mother-of-pearl dial is protected by sapphire crystal, which is not a matter of course for this price range. Indices and hands are covered with Swiss Super-LumiNova. Thus, they shine brightly in the dark and ensure optimal readability.
With a diameter of 43 millimeters, the Spinnaker Fleuss Automatic Pearl Diver clearly surpasses contemporary divers of the 50s. On the wrist, you wear the timepiece with a stainless steel bracelet. This brings the Fleuss to a weight of 190 grams, but this does not harm the wearing comfort in everyday life. Only the water resistance I personally find – let’s put it this way – okay. 15 bar is sufficient for swimming and snorkeling. However, if you want to do some serious diving, you’d be better off with 20 bar.
Nevertheless, for the Spinnaker Fleuss Automatic Pearl Diver, I give a clear recommendation. Especially if you want to wear mother-of-pearl for the first time, the diver is a sensible entry-level model that is easy on the wallet and with its nostalgic design is right on trend right now.
